For a design-driven itinerary around the City of Angels, we turn to Christos Joannides, the founder and creative director of FLAT 6 CONCEPTS. His luxury branding agency — and favorite haunts — are guided by the ethos of understated sophistication.
ADMIRE / The Pacifi c Design Center encapsulates the creativity and high-end design for which Los Angeles is known. Located in the heart of West Hollywood, the three buildings bearing the primary colors of blue, green, and red are hard to miss. The first to go up, aka the Blue Whale, was polarizing in its design. With stunning showrooms of all major furniture designers and art exhibits, the Pacific Design Center plays a major role in the creative fabric of Los Angeles.
DRESS / L.A. native James Perse has single-handedly captured the Southern California/West Coast vibe. His cool, minimalist approach has evolved from designing the perfect baseball cap to a line of men’s, women’s, and home collections. Using a primary palette of black, white, and gray, his muted and understated hues have become his signature aesthetic.
STAY / L.A. always seems to be the last major city to develop design-centric hotels. Most hotels here are more classic and iconic than trendy. From Chateau Marmont to the Beverly Hills Hotel and Sunset Tower in West Hollywood, these hotels have become landmarks and are hard to compete with. However, the latest property that marks a shift is the EDITION on Sunset Boulevard, in West Hollywood. Developed by Ian Schrager and designed by one of my favorite architects, English-born John Pawson, it is my favorite spot when it comes to minimalist, clean, and sophisticated design.
EAT / I think Crossroad Kitchen on Melrose Avenue, serving Mediterranean-inspired cuisine, has completely reimagined what a vegan restaurant should be. It is, in essence, the embodiment of Los Angeles culture: innovative, refined, and unapologetic. This place has managed to become a destination for vegans and carnivores alike, attracting visitors, locals, and celebrities. I personally love the shawarma mushroom bowl and the chocolate rocher for dessert. YUM!
INSPIRE / I personally like solitude and being outdoors in nature. Going on long, winding hikes is my escape and inspiration. It’s my time to organize my thoughts and clear my head. One of my favorite hikes is called Paseo Miramar. Although it is certainly a challenging trek, you are rewarded with stunning ocean views and picture-perfect surroundings.
