SOUL SANCTUARY

By: ERIN MICHELLE NEWBERG

Nestled on the tranquil island of Koh Samui in southern Thailand, Kamalaya stands as a beacon of holistic wellness, offering an escape for those seeking to rejuvenate their mind, body, and spirit. What sets this retreat apart in a world brimming with wellness destinations? Erin Michelle Newberg investigates.

Rooted in rich Buddhist history and its founders’ deep passion for spirituality and healing, Kamalaya’s allure lies in its potent blend of soulful intensity and wellness protocols. Established in 2000 by John and Karina Stewart, Kamalaya is a manifestation of their vision, brought to life through extensive experiences and expertise. The retreat’s offerings are as comprehensive as they are impressive. My nine-day ‘Basic Balance & Revitalize’ program was just what I needed to bounce back from a burnout.

Upon arrival, visitors are greeted by a property designed with Feng Shui principles and styled by Hong Kong-based master Ronald Wong. The Thai-style architecture blends seamlessly with the natural surroundings, creating an immediate sense of tranquility. At the heart of Kamalaya is the Arjan Cave, a historical retreat once used by monks, now serving as a serene prayer nook.

Notable guests, including supermodel Elle Macpherson and actress Parker Posey, have found solace within its candle-lit walls. The cave features a display of elevated wooden boats reminiscent of a shrine, honoring the late monk Arjan Daeng, who spent years at Kamalaya before it was transformed into a spa.

Kamalaya’s approach to wellness is holistic, combining ancient traditions with modern medical research. Karina Stewart, a doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine, oversees the wellness programs and cuisine. Chef Mohan Rawat, who joined the team in 2023, brings his expertise in Ayurvedic nutrition and wellness, ensuring that each meal is both visually appealing and nutritionally balanced. The menu caters to various dietary needs, including detox, ideal weight, and keto diets, all aimed at restoring gut health.

The ‘Basic Balance & Revitalize’ experience, part of the ‘Stress and Burnout’ wellness category, included sixteen treatments throughout my stay, each meticulously designed to support personal recovery. The retreat’s nearly 400 employees deliver exceptional service, whether it’s a nurse practitioner at ‘The Longevity Center’ conducting functional medical assessments, or a therapist at ‘The Wellness Sanctuary’ offering traditional and non-traditional body therapies such as Ayurvedic Shirodhara or Thai Lanna Abdominal Samunphrai Ron. The spa menu boasts over seventy services, complemented by daily group classes like Tai Chi, Qi Gong, and Yoga. A medical Myofascial release massage, which I’ve booked on several occasions, effectively breaks down muscular blockages and alleviates deep pains in the back and neck. Another profound experience was the Reiki session, where emotions surfaced through gentle touches and deep breathing, allowing for introspective reflection. Personal problems seemed to dissolve through tears.

For those seeking relaxation, Kamalaya offers two stunning pools, lotus ponds, and breathtaking island views that invite leisurely pursuits. Guests can enjoy a Bastien Gonzalez pedicure, take a cold plunge, soak in a steam bath, or lounge in a hammock by the sea, sipping on a freshly cut Thai coconut. The state-of-the-art fitness center is also available for those who wish to maintain their exercise routines.

Kamalaya’s commitment to holistic health and wellness is evident in every aspect of the retreat. It is life-changing, according to its many loyal fans, who often return, considering it the ultimate getaway that seamlessly blends ancient wisdom with modern science. I, for one, wholeheartedly agree.
